BACKGROUND
Poultry farming in Kenya took on a fresh look in 2011 with the launch of Improved Kienyeji Chicken Rearing by the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute and the Indian Kuroiler. Farmers used to frequently concentrate on raising layers and broilers. Kienyeji farming was still not commercialized and was only carried out on a modest scale. However, in recent years, farmers have shown a significant interest in enhanced kienyeji raising, and they are now using it not only for domestic purposes but also for commercial ones. The practice has also spread to certain metropolitan regions, albeit it hasn’t entirely been incorporated into these places’ main sources of income.
KIENYEJI is a locally used Swahili name.
Its translation into English is “Free range.”
Current favorites in Kenya include a variety of enhanced kienyeji breeds, including:
Kari enhanced kienyeji.
Kuroiler enhanced kienyeji 2.
3. Rooster in a Rainbow
4. Chicken sasso

6. The prevailing Kienyeji chicken
There are numerous ways to raise Kienyeji chickens in Kenya, including:
First, FREE RANGE
The birds may search for food over a large, open region when they are allowed to roam free. To shield the birds from harsh weather conditions, temporary shelters may be offered. The birds may scurry around often in tree nests and liter gathering locations.
It might be challenging to prevent inbreeding in flocks that contain birds of various breeds and ages.
Given that 100 birds will need 0.4 hectares of space, the stocking density in this situation should not exceed 1000 birds per hectare.
Requirements;
1. A big, gated, well-drained piece of land with trees for shade.
2. Land divided into runs to allow rotation and lessen parasite buildup.
3. A structure for nests and shelter
ADVANTAGES
reduced egg consumption and cannibalism since there is no overcrowding
Fewer feeds are utilized because birds forage outside.
evenly applying fertilizer to the runs
low initial capital expenditure
DISADVANTAGES
There is a need for a lot of land, which might not be available.
There is a risk that the area will pick up illnesses and parasites.
Birds under risk from robbers or predators
It is challenging to closely monitor individual birds.
